timing belt

Question--just purchased from dealer 92 SE, 5 speed, in great condition. 98,000 miles. I'm wondering is a new timing belt needed in the near future? I drive it like it's a Porsche...sometimes. Any thoughts besides driving like miss daisy...

Is it on the original timing belt? If so then definately replace it.

Costs vary a lot. I paid about 350 with water pump replacement. Ive heard of more and Ive heard of less. The second time I did it myself..not too hard and gives you a good oportunity to slap in an underdrive pulley.

You do NOT have a timing belt on a 92SE. It is a timing CHAIN.

Do not worry about changing it.

89-94 GXE,89-91SE= VG30E 160hp.

92-94 SE = VE30DE-Dual overhead cams 190hp.

92-94 SE models don't have a timing belt, they only have timing chains. You don't have to worry about changing it.

92 5spd Maxima Stalling

Help if you can...My Max is stalling, but it doesn't seem fuel/air related. The engine is not idling hard, it doesn't sputter before a stall, the Max just kills intermittently. It almost seems electrical. However, what contradicts this thought is that it usually happens after a cold start.

Anyway, it's been with my mechanic for the past week. He thought it was the ECU. I sent the ECU to have it diagnosed and it came back fine.

I saw a post recommending: "Check the intake hose and see if it is cracked. This is the black hose from the air meter to the filter box. Another area to check is the distributor for oil on the optical pickup. The distributor uses a optical pickup and shutter wheel that tells the computer when to fire the plugs. If oil gets past the distributor's internal seal the optics get coated and the engine runs like you describe."

Any thoughts as to what might be causing this problem?

probably bad coil packs. Pretty much the cause of 75% of the stalling problems on VE's. They are $60 each new I think. internetautomart.com might have new or used ones.

You dont have distributor. so thats impossible.

possibly coil packs but it's interesting the Service Engine light is NOT coming on, there aren't any errors when this happens.

I'll check with my mechanic and have him test the coils. I don't know what he's going to charge to replace but it seems quite simple (I have the Chilton's book) so I might just do it myself.

Thanks for the comments Alex

I have a few questions for you about your stalling issue.
I might be able to help you out. I have almost 10 years as a nissan tech.

You said that it stalls after cold soak.
1. How long after start up does it stall?
2. can you keep your foot on the gas to keep it running?

1. My wife had been driving it to her office, about 20 miles, with the first 5 miles being city drive - less than 35mph. The same would be true on her way home. It would stall at least 2-3 times within that 5 miles with no discernable reason behind the stall (NOT always happening at takeoff, etc.). After that it is highway driving and nothing happens.
I started driving to work, which is about 5 miles (city) and it would stall on me a couple of times also.
2. No, gas doesn't seem to do the trick. If I push on the gas when it starts to kill, nothing happens, it's like I'm not even like I'm giving it gas. RPM's don't go up or anything.

okay if giving gas doesn't help, then when it dies, is it instant or does it seem to chug, spit or sputter before stalling?

When I say instant, I mean just like you shut off the key.

Exactly, instant. No chug, sputter, or spit. A couple of days before it started happening regularly, it would almost kill and then start up again. But it still didn't sputter, it acted like I turned the key off but then quick turned it back on.

I have a 1991 Maxima and just found out I need to replace my water pump. I figure I will change the timing belt as well. Is there a repair site that will walk me through the process?

Does your car have a bad relay switch to your fuel pump

I don't think so because I'm not having any trouble starting the car at any time, even after a stall. I hear the fuel pump run when I start the car also. If I remember right the fuel pump relay doesn't much have an impact after the car is started, not 100% on that coment though.

I sent the ECU in a couple of weeks ago for diagnostics test and the results are that it works fine.

Anybody else have any thoughts???

Hey

My relay switch went bad, my car would die when i was driving it, sometimes it wouldnt even start, so i replaced the fuel pump first thinking that was the problem but it was the relay that went koo koo and i could have fixed my car without that damn pump o well

Ive heard that the belt should be replaced every 100,000km, but I think its a bunch of BS cause I just had mine done. And it was a nissan belt not an aftermarket one. I was at about 150,000km over the limit and the belt was replaced and the mechanic told me the belt was in mint shape still.

what tha...your car doesnt even have a chain unless you changed your tail lights (you have 89-91SE tails).

The only US 3rd gen that has a timing chain is the 92-94 SE with the VE30DE.

The VG30E which was in the 89-94 GXE and 89-91 SE does in fact have a timing belt.
