Electrical / Rear Brake Lights Problems

Electrical / Rear Brake Lights Problems
I have a 1992 Maxima Se. Recently I discovered that the rear brake lights are no longer lighting when the brake pedal is depressed. Additionally, I an unable to shift out of Park without using the manual release, even though the brake pedal is being pressed.
Anyone have any insight into this problem. Could it be as aimple as a brake pedal switch or am I looking at major problems.
Any help is appreciated.

it should be a switch near the upper part of the pedal and it'll have a little pin switch that moves in and out (gets released when the brake pedal is pressed I think), probably just replace that and it should be ok
you have 2 switches there I believe - one for brake lights and stuff, other for cruise control cancel
