It is an interference engine. If the timing chains break, you are screwed.

Re: Re: Ve30de Interference Motor ??????

I was looking through a engine spec book for all japanese motor and it had IE by the ones that were interference engine, but the VG30DE did NOT have the IE by the engine. This is why I am trying to find out for sure. I made a screw up while replacing the sprockets and would really like to be sure before I pull the heads off. Has any one seen in the manual if it is IE or not????

I think possibly those with timing chains are interface, and those with timing belts are not. Maybe. I just got my timing replaced and my mechanic said mine was not interface.

I know for a fact the VG is an interference engine because that is how I got my 92. A friend of mine had the timing belt slip or break and it bent every valve in it. I got it dirt cheap and repaired the heads and absolutely love the car even though its my wifes and I dont drive it much.

I am not sure about the VE though and hope to not find out personally .

it is an interferance motor. if pistons and valves collide the engine will blow a la Formula 1. my brother blew my VE up at ~90mph and laid a smokescreen across the highway.

You've pulled your heads before??? I've once looked up the labor for replacing the chains at work and its like an 18hr job that i will never be doing if i just happen to be one of the unlucky few who have chain probs.

The VG in our Maximas is an inteference engine. So is the VE. However, Ford used the VG in the Mercury Villager minivan. They made Nissan change the motor to a non interference engine. So, there are plenty of non-interference VGs in existence.
