weight

How much does the weight of audio equipment effect the acceleration and overall preformance when you are trying to get a lot of power. ie....having a (friendly) drive with another car.

WELL...

when you add more weight , your car response slower, handling and accel wise. of course it might not be a huge difference, but when you buy a SUB and then another and then another it adds up. bigger wheels could be heavier do to rotational mass so i guess stereo equipment isnt the worst thing for weight. it all depends , music or performance? a good basic stereo system should not weigh that much more compared to a stock system (unless you have 2 15s in the back or something)

like nismo-max said...your stock wheels may weigh more than some aftermarket ones...but weight distributed to HP is real hard to calculate when actually measuring all that.

yep...it all depends on the size of your system. i didn't feel any slow down when i bought my system. But i only have two 10's. for example, if you have those monsterous 15 inch MTX RFLs...each one weighs a good 56 pounds. You have two of those in your trunk and that's an easy 112 pounds WITHOUT the box and amp.

112lbs on a car that already tips the scales at over 3k...

Hmmmmm....

You better decide whether youd rather go fast or sound good, you're not getting both. At least, not with a "competition grade" system anyways. Just fabricate a new frame for the fronts so you can mount 6.5"s and get some 3-way 6x9"s in the back. I have Boston 2-way 3.5"s up front and Pioneer Premier 3-way 6x9"s in back right now, and they're loud enough to drown out almost everything with the windows down. That should be all the sound you need while still keeping weight down.

IIRC pearl93gxe ran a 16.6 @ 81-82mph without his subs/amps in. With the subs and amps he ran 17.0 @ 79mph. His car weighed around 3060lbs without driver and his music was around 100-150lbs.

that's why you build an amprack and sub system that you can remove.

my amprack weighs about 65lb with all the equipment and my subs add another 80 or so. when I run at the track, I pull it out. takes 15 minutes.

when I'm on the street, I don't care. I'm not "racing" people anyway.
