transmission problems
I have a 1993 Maxima and i recently started experiencing that while
the car's transmission is changing gears, it does a little violent
(not smooth) jerking and i thought i better show it to a professional
before it goes worse. I took it to Cottmans and i let the guy test
drive it with me he says: using his terms "a bang" between gears 1 to
2 and 2 to 3 and back ward too.
he said he will plug his computer into it and let me know, i went home
and then got a call from him saying i need a drop resistor for further
testing and that will cost me 100 dollars and that this "drop" might
solve the problem.
any ideas guys and what is this drop resistor thing, has anyone ever
had such situations. please enlighten me on this, i feel like the
cottman guy may want to swindle me into more repairs. please write all
you know about the problem, can i trust this repair shop?

The transmission shop may be on the right track. There is a device called a "dropping resistor" in the circuit for the line pressure solenoid. The connector for this resistor is located on the plastic can next to the air filter box on the left side strut tower. If this connector is unplugged or the circuit through the resistor is open, then the line pressure in the transmission will be too high and will cause it to shift very hard. Replacing the resistor is easy since it's located under the air cleaner box. It's a rectangular ceramic block secured to the air filter mount with a nut and stud. I've never had to buy one, but it seems like everything on the car is "around $100 or so". Hope this helps.
