drivability problems

My 94 GXE was sitting outside one cold night, and when I went to start it, it wouldnt catch. I've managed to get it started, and it starts hard and idles very rough. One or two cylinders are misfiring. When the accelerator is pushed in slightly, the tach will jump to about 4k and stay there, despite the fact that the engine is not revving nearly that high. I took it for a drive to try to figure out what is wrong, and I noticed the transmission was shifting very poorly. It was also using a fair amount of fuel, so this lead me to the conclusion that the MAF was broken. I checked its voltage today and it all falls within spec. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be??
