Oil pump question
Oil pump question
This is a fairly rare 5spd Maxima SE. The car is red with black leather, and the interior is in repectable condition for it's age. Body is in good shape, few paint chips, never in accident. The engine is a 3.0 DOHC V6 putting out 190HP with pleanty left. Every option is included; Dual 4way power seats, cruise control, power everything, ect. A few add ons include; 16in alloy wheels from a 2001 Maxima GLE with brand new Dunlop A2 Sports (about 4000miles) The Wheels go for about $1500 from the dealer and the tires about $450. New brakes all the way around, new rotors in the front, new exhuast parts, K&N Air Filter. I am a non-smoker and the car has been very well maintained. It drives great and has many years of life left. I have observed 20-25 MPG, so it is fairly good on gas. It was at the mechanic recently and the oil pump is not keeping consistant pressure, so it will need replaced. This casues some internal tapping from the sprockets which could be resolved with a new water pump but the can't garuntee it. An engine swap might even be worth it, which this car is fairly accepting. Retail is around $4000 plus the additions but I am willing to accept a reasonable offer.
This is the guys ad for selling the car. he tells me the oil pump is going out and the oil pressure is low. and the vtc's are knocking because of the pump. he wants 2400 for it. but im not so sure its worth it. can someone please help me with making an educated decision.

Have you seen the car? According to KBB the Private party sale price for fair condition with assuming 150k miles is about 2500... But it is a 5 speed!!

Also tell him it's gonna cost about $600 for replacement engine
After you're rolling with the car come back to the org and search "grounding VTC" do procedure and enjoy a quieter car.
With that said I have to say the following. It is very possible that the engine could have a worn oil pump, but Nissan oil pump have not been known to go out permaturely. Most mechanics are not aware of the VTC's in these VE30DE engine. They will diagnose the noise as bad lifters, worn oil pump, etc. and to be honest if I wasn't aware about the VTC's I would have diagnosed it the same way.
So ask yourself "Are you willing to take a chance, well are you punk" in my best Clint Eastwood voice

It looks like a nice car from the pix, but does the spedo work? it could have more than 123k on it. I would say if you can drive it and it seems ok go for it dude. He is definately asking less than blue book for it in fair condition so that would be with bad VTC's. If you think the price is too steep offer him 2k for it in cash and see what he says.
