lately when i drive, i get a gasoline smell, but i'm not sure where it's comin from. and it's only when the windows are down. if i open the hood, you can't smell anything, and there's no smell from the tank either. can anyone help? i'm a bit worried.

I have that same problem. Especially when I have the 'Windsheild vent & Lower' heating on and I am at a stop. My guess would be that it has something to do with the exhaust studs starting to fail.
I know that when the studs do break, loud/obnoxious -blaat, blaat, blaat- sound is heard. The studs right now might not be entirely broken yet, but broken enough to let some exhaust slip out, and then flow into the cabin area.

But that's just my guess.

probably the rubber gas linea are cracked. during the cold temps, the rubber lines contract causing the cracks to widen and gas seeps out. when the temp warms up, the lines expands closing up the cracks, preventing the gas to leak. replace the rubber fuel line and see if the problem is solved.

re:gas smell

check the evap (charcoal canister) mounted underneath the battery. it's shaped like a coffee can. If it's cracked or damaged there's a good chance that's the source of your propblem.

you may also want to see if the filler pipe recall was ever done on your car. They were recalled for rusting out and then leaking. I had the problem and took it to the dealer and they fixed it for free. My flex pipe was also cracked and I just took it off and used some fuel line tape to patch it up and it hasn't leaked ever sense (over a year) That could be the sourse of your gas odor.

How long did it take for you to get the fuller filler neck replaced on ya max? Let me know?

The acutal filler neck I was done by the dealer (recall). Just give your local dealer a call and ask them to run your vin to see if you qualify for the recall and set up an appt. with them to fix it. It is free. As for doing the job yourself it should take less than an hour. Just take off the rear wheel and inside wheel cover and I believe there are just a few screws that hold it in and 2 hoses. I was going to do the job myself (purchased a filler valve) until I fould out about the recall. I did however patch my filler rubber tube with fuel line tape which took about 20 minutes to do.

Well i called my local dealer and yes I qualify for the recall, but get this i have to bring the car in and let them examine the filler neck and if it needs replacement on their judgement they will then repair it.???? I dont get that one? I thought since it was a recall that it should be done free of charge regardless of the condition?

Nissan doesn't want to just throw money around and fix all cars. The recall is there only if the filler neck shows dangerous and significant damage. If your filler neck is fine and dandy, Nissan isn't going to change it for you.

Good luck.

Chances are that if you are smelling strong gas that your filler neck is bad, mine was so badly rusted that they replaced it. Now... you know how dealers are, they told me a long list of things that needed to be fixed on my car (all of which I had just done a month before). Just bring it in and let them evaluate it. If you want to look under to see if it is the hose check that out first, mine was cracked and they didn't replace it in the recall. That is why I repaired it myself with fuel line tape.

Re: gas smell

I dont mean to burst anyones bubbles but I would forget about the fuel filler recall if I were you. I had a few post about this a couple of months ago when I had my 89GXE. My trunk was completely rusted out the filler neck was flaking because it was so rusted and the wheel well was almost completely gone. The dealer had my car for a week just to tell me to pick it up and they will call me if they decide to fix it. I called Nissan to complain and the lady said that there is nothing that can be done "its completely up to the dealer" Well I sold that car to the junkyard almost three months ago and still havent received a call from the dealer. Simple and Plain Nissan is not going to do any recall repairs at this point on our 10-14 year old cars. Sorry.

They took mine in and fixed it in a few hours with no problems. So if you had a bad experience with your car I am sorry but a recall is a recall, it is a law, they have to fix it if it fits the recall regardless of the age of the car. Now if your car was rusted beyond all recognition then it must have been more trouble than it was worth for the dealer to fix.

Thats not completely true you can ask anyone on the org. They dont have to fix it. A recall is something that they can choose to do or not. If it will cost more than a specifically budgeted number of labor hours then they will not complete the job.

I agree with that saying if it is not cost effective to fix it then they won't fix it. But if the filler pipe is just rusted then they will fix it. But only if your specific car is in the recall. Also if it is considered a safety related recall then they must fix it.

I have the same problem, and I've had the recall item checked and they said nothing was wrong. If I fill the gas up entirely now, it leaks for a while, which was the main reason I brought it in. So now I only fill my tank to about 3/4 full.

Your filler hose is cracked mine did the same thing. I had the recall done and all they did was replace the filler pipe not the hose. I took the hose off and taped it up with fuel line tape and put it back on. Works great now. DEFINATELY check your filler hose. Almost guarantee that is what is wrong.

Thank you, I plan on doing that. What upset me was the dealership I took it to for the recall said nothing was wrong, yes, I understand that maybe what the recall was for is not the problem, but they expect me to believe that the gas is SUPPOSED to leak??
