My First post.. Need Help with the tranny
Hi all,
Well I got mine just yesterday, its got 105K and seems like the tranny fluid was never changed.
Symptoms: Put it in Drive and it acts like its in neutral, have to tap it a little to get it going. I hoping that changing the fluid and filter should make a difference.
Questions...
What tranny fluid to use, manual says to use Dexron, I saw Dexron III and Dexron II at WalMart so which one to use?
Any ides or suggestions are welcomed
thanks

Best fluid I've found to use is Castrol Dexron III.. black bottle. it's a mid-price range. like $3/bottle or so.
Also, our cars have very "soft" trannies. the torque convertor doesn't do much at idle rpm, and you do have to give it some gas before it'll start moving. I'm going to make a wild guess and say you used to own American or a Honda before this car?
they all set up everything so that you have to stand on the brakes to keep the car from moving when it's in gear. this causes annoying vibrations at idle and wear on the torque convertor.
Nissan and Toyota set things up much softer so there's less engine vibrations, and it requires less brake effort to keep the car stopped.

First off welcome to the org. Most people would start off this reply by saying... use the search function at the top of the page. LOL... well, it has been disabled for who knows how long. Now to answer your question...
The reason you have to tap the shifter to get it to go into gear is b/c your shifter linkage bushing is worn. It's a $4 bushing from the dealership and you can install it yourself by following the directions in this write up....

As for the ATF... use Dexron III. Make sure your fluid is always cherry bright red and smells like fresh fluid. ALWAYS!! If it smells burnt, then you have a problem you need to get checked out immediately.
Hope this helps.
