Knock sensor in 91 SE

Is it possible that the SOHC motors could have knock sensor problems??
Some of the issues I have sound like the ones described in other posts. When cold the car runs strong, but as it heats up it seams to go flat(sluggish). Slight hesitation on lite throttle application. Also seems to have torque convertor shudder. Any help would be appreceated.

Don't know if they do but I hope someone does. My '91 Max does the same thing, only it actually cuts out sometimes, like it isn't gonna go, and then it KICKS and runs like hell.

knock sensor help desparately needed

Hey,

89 Maxima code 34 in computer, vg30e engine. doesnt wanna re-start after motor gets warmed up to noraml temp (appears to be flooding). Could the knock sensor be the problem? I know ve's had that prob. Will it cause that prob. on a VG? Also, there are 2 different sensors for these things. Most have a round-headed plug, mine has a rectangular one, and the plug/harness is different. Anyone had similar problems? Is there a way to install the common knock sensor on mine? All help is extremely appreciated.

What does the 34 code indicate?

sounds more like O2 sensor. knock sensors are not known to fail for the VGs.

Check your ECU it may give you an error code. You may also want to check your Throttle Position sensor.

some of you guys need to at least MAYBE scrow down 1-2 pages before starting a thread EXACTLY like another that's 2-10 posts down.

knock sensor

It is not my intention to clutter the board, but the last time I asked some questions about this, I got some responses from some wise (you know whats) that tried to answer my post in the subject line with one word. I am attempting to get legitimate help here. I appreciate any real help, but those who have no clue should not respond to a thread. That is where the bulk of the clutter is. Code 34 is the knock sensor code. I changed plugs in it already. It seems to flood them after motor gets heated up and you try to restart it. If you give it a while to dry out and start it with accelerator fully depressed, it will start again. The knock sensor connecotr was full of oil. Do you think this is just a coincidence, and I actually have multiple problems? All real attempts at helping are greatly appreciated.

well if you're certain it's the knock sensor then change the sensor. even you said that 34 is that sensor. but if your engine is flooding then i doubt it's a knock sensor. the knock sensor just tells the ECU to retard timing until knock stops. that doesn't usually flood the motor to the point that it won't run until you're WOT.

since you're stalling and having problems when HOT i concluded that it's your O2 sensor. during cold start it's runs open loop (not pick up signal from O2)...then when it warms up it tried to pick up a signal from the O2 but since it's faulty it doesn't register proper voltage and hence makes the car run rich (dumps fuel) that might in turn make the knock go off due to improper mixture burn.

but hey what the he11 do i know. i'm not looking at your car...all i'm doing it going by your description of the problem. my/our suggestions maybe wrong or incorrect..but take it w/ a grain of salt. the O2 are not TOO much $ and it's changed out on a certain interval.

it could be other things like bad spark plug wires or bad plugs..or motor out of tune.

If the connector is full with oil, then thats obviously bad. Try cleaning the connectors with some alchol (use a small paint brush to get in there well) and dry it well before putting it back together.

I know most issues with the KS seem to be with the VE engine, but it is still very possible that the VG will have either a similar issue (concering a bad sub harness like the VE), or the KS could simple gone bad.

Re: Re: knock sensor

Thanks for the help, it is appreciated. Shouldnt the O2 sensor set a code if it is bad? I wasn't knocking on anybody trying to help me. I just got a couple of responses on here once before that just said "yeah" with no explanation and that didnt make sense to what I'd written. I think I'll clean the KS connector like the other guy suggested, try it and go from there.

Thanks,
Jbenn

The O2 sensor degrads over time, and I reccomend changing it every 60-70k miles apart of a normal maintanance shedule. You can find the sensor for around $60. Not only does changing the sensor keep the car from wasting gas, but it keeps the exhaust system from rusting away.
