Is this rust?

Hi.

I recently noticed what looks to be either side-panel rust or faded paint on my 1994 Maxima. Here is a picture:

Notice that it only effects the part of the side that sticks out from the body. Is this rust or simply faded paint? Is it possible to remove using some type of chemical solution, or should I have the panel replaced (on both sides).

Thanks.

that's just faded paint. very common on light colored cars. you can remove those strips (they're plastic, btw), and repaint them.

you can repaint them on the car, but you get better results if you remove and paint.

Thanks...and by the way, what is the best way to avoid this problem in the future? Waxing the car once a year?
