power steering prob

Hi guys. i am having problems with my power steering pump and i've been looking at pumps on ebay. they have some pretty cheap pumps and i was wondering if another power steering pump would fit other than a 3rd gen max, i.e. a 4th or 5th gens. please leave me a message.

thanks!

why mess with it? since they're so cheap, why not just buy the one made for your car?

Hello again. I found a pump on ebay for $30, but its not new. Could someone take a look at it for me and tell me if it looks ok? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33588

Another question i have is about the installation of the power steering pump. I am a broke college student and I was wondering if replacing a p/s pump is a "do-it yourself" job. (i need to save money if at all possible.) If it isnt a job for a novice, any estimates on how much labor would cost if I had a mechanic install it?

Thanks for your time

-Nate

p.s. this took me about 20 mins to write because my fuggin spacebar key is broke. Had to copy and paste all of the spaces. lol

I wouldnt get that one.. You have to becarefull of used old parts.. b.c then you have the same problem again. sure its an quick fix.. but do you want to damage the rack and pinion hydrolicks.. which i think cost upwards of 1000+. Go to a NAAPA store and get a rebuilt unit. sure it could fail again, but atleast they changed some parts in the pump.. they job was done at a friends shop and took him a while like 30-40 minutes and that is with a lift.. and its a very tight squeeze down there.. take it to a mechanic.

That ebay pump actually looks fine. If you have the skill to remove and install a pump yourself, I would absolutely encourage you to get this one, especially if you get it for $9.99. Take a look at a manual to see what the job entails. Take a look at the pump on your car, judge it for yourself. Power steering pumps aren't something that normally go bad, but they do, most of them will last the life of the car. I would say that the failure of pumps in Nissans is due to people not changing the ATF (which wears down), and adding power steering fluid if it's ever low.

If you're going to take it to a mechanic for installation, then I'd reccomend a new pump. When you're paying for labor, you don't want to pay for labor on used parts. If/when the used part fails then you will have to pay the labor AGAIN to do the same job, which is a big waste of money. So if you buy a new pump, most likely you won't have to pay to re-install it because it shouldn't fail.

good luck.
