i made my own intake mod

my car is all stock, except for the following "mod"

i was thinking the regular air box is restrictive. there is a tube from the intake on the airbox that goes to behind the headlight where the car gets the air from. well i just took that whole thing of so it gets the air strait from the side of the air box. i noticed a little better throttle response and a little more low end torque. the biggest thing i noticed was the sound. man this thing sounds low and pipy, like V8 low. it sounds awesome. i also went and got a kn air filter and put that in. there is a noticeable increase in power, not a lot but it is defanatly noticable. i dont know if this has ever been done but i thought it was pretty cool, and its free, except for the air filter. just thought id share with you guys to see what you thought about it.

I tried doing that a while back too, and had a similar experience. In addition to removing the first stage airpipe, I also used a Dremel tool to cut off the entire side of the airbox where the mounting hole for the airpipe was. That seemed to produce an even greater performance increase, and improved the tone.

Since then, I've also taken the plastic intake midpipe, and again using my trusty Dremel tool :-) , shaved the molded resonator cavities from the bottom of the pipe. The 1" diameter hole is easy to seal, and I noticed further performance and tone (louder and deeper) gains after doing the modification.

I've since removed my stock airbox and put in a JWT CAI, which seems to give better results though.

Agreed - weekend hacks rock!

I did the same thing with the dremel and cut off all of the bottom portion of the airbox except portions that were needed to maintain a seal against the filter and also the mounting pegs. Really growls when you stomp it but practically unnoticable the rest of the time.

for the monye you spent on that K&N panel filter, you could have had a "real" intake....

my ghetto rig

it was cheap. I took an old filter I had from off my Z, and a stainless 90 that they generously gave me at a previous job .... and a rubber intake pipe from the Z, and that did it.

I could neaten it up a bit with less wire ties, but I don't care what it looks like. If you saw the rest of this beater you'd understand. It has body damage that would cost more to fix than to buy another car.

haha...if you saw the rest of the car you'd understand why I don't bother. I could spend 3 days cleaning on the car and it would still be a beat up piece of junk...but would still run like a new car. That's the only reason I keep it.

I have pulled the back seat out, no carpet, no center console and more..it's like my truck now, packed full of junk.

imagine Fred Sanford driving a Maxima...

I bought this car when it was like a new one for the 'ho' that was my wife. She began the destruction before we split. THen she had the car for almost a year before I got it back. She tore it to pieces, let kids eat in it, she smoked in it and more. The headliner looks like somebody had a squeeze ketsup bottle in there and was squirting zig zags on it.

I'd send pics of it, but I'd hate to make you guys cry from seeing such a nice car destroyed.

I am a prime example for making sure that the ford is getting fixed or repaired daily. stupid thing, if it wasnt a ford I'd be much farther along in the restoration. The "O" from the "FORD" letters on the hood pops out everytime you close the hood. Im thinking about making it a "DORF" but need to think of some creative slogan to go with it... not worth the time.

you'd never notice the difference. The gains from the better filter by far outweigh any effects due to air temp. It's enough to be measured on the asspucker dyno.

Dude, Dorf doesn't need any creative slogans... You ever see his movies?
If not, definately rent "Dorf and the First Games of Mt. Olympus", it's hilarious
