Dead Speedometer and Odometer

Dead Speedometer and Odometer
I have a 1989 Maxima GXE Auto Trans. The speedo and odo are dead. Some say it is the speedo and other say it is the speed sensor.
Anyone here have a similar problem or have experience with this?
