Lower center console and shifter warm
Lower center console and shifter warm
I have a 93 SE 5spd. 123k miles. Here's the deal:
The shift boot and the console below the shifter all the way forward gets very warm after driving after an hour. Really hot during warmer weather. Any ideas?
Thanx in advance,
Pete

Re: Lower center console and shifter warm
The only thing that's close to that area is your catalytic converter. Perhaps it's clogged up causing it to become very warm. If it was your transmission running hot, you'd feel it more in your feet, since the tranny is in front of them in the engine compartment.
My 92 auto is the same, i just always assumed it was a combination of the exhaust and the illumination lights around the shifter stick at night... Mine is warm, but doesn't feel like its gonna melt or anything.. How hot is it getting?
Its getting pretty warm. For example, in the summer, with shorts on, resting my right leg against it is fairly uncomfortable. It just seems hotter than normal.
If its my cat, how would i get that cleaned out?

Well buying a new Cat may not be necessary.
Its possible that the heat sheild above the cat has fallen off! If you can properly jack the car up (put it on ramps) you could take a look.
Another suggestion, have you ever used any injector cleaner? like chevron techron or whatever. Personally I'd suggest you try the one made by Lucas (its in a smaller slender bottle) it pours out like syrup! very concentrated. I'd suggest adding it before filling with gas. I've noticed a difference when using that stuff.
And another product is 'sea foam' its a liquid that you SLOWLY add to the intake manifold while the engine is running, the engine vaccum will suck it in (follow the instructions), I only used about half the bottle. After following the instructions I took the car out for a little high rpm driving and noticed a nice stream of black smoke out the tail pipe, thats the carbon deposits being expelled (a large part will be from the cat).

"car running like crap? just pour this stuff in and BAM car will instantly run like new!"
"tranny shifting lousy? oh just add this **** and all your troubles are solved!"
mine console and shifter is doin the same but it jus started bout a week ago... i have to still put in my RT hi-flow cat, will that help out a little maybe?? i used to put injector cleaner in every once and a while but i havent done that in about a month, but i did notice a difference when i was puttin it in
Mine too. i have a 90 5speed. I think the prob is since i have a straight pipe there is no extra heat shields except for the one directly below the shifter. normally there would be 2 one on the cat itsself and one on car. thats my thought . . . .
