All autos do this, it is a way for them to warm up faster, higher RPM's. It won't start shifting into 4th until the temp is about half way to normal

yea im pretty sure that until the car is at operating temrature the computer controls everyhting with out any input from driving conditions. once warm it takes things like 02 into account and all that other good stuff

Yep very normal...mine takes about 6 miles or 10 minutes or so to kick in...It waits until the fluid is at normal operating temperature...so I avoid the freeway until my car is warmed up so my car isn't idling to high...

my car does the same its an 88' and it does this too. Mine kicks in depending on how cold it is. its weird. I might needa higher temp Thermostat. Because it will mess up your transmission if it downshifts from overdrive to third gear continuosly. Mine does that alot when cold. See with mine as soon as it passes the C just abit itll kick in. But if the temp drops some what itll kick back out and be in third gear, and I hate it. Then itll kick back in When warm enough. I think I need a new thermostat already or a higher temp one. I just changed it before I left Texas in May.

hmm....

I must take note of this. My car.....even when bone cold will get into 4th AFTER 35mph. If I'm at 34 it will stay in 3rd. Now once the tranny is fully warm it will get into 3rd at 25mph. I wonder if maybe it SHOULDN'T get into 4th regardless of speed until after it warms up. The reason I ask this is because in the morning....when still pretty cold....if I ge up to 40 and then have to come to a stop...the 4 to 3 shift is lousy...it kinda drops out of fouth....hangs....then into 3rd.

???????

Well whenever wherever i start my car if its in the mornging i like to let it warm up a bit i dont drive off immediatly no matter waht kinda rush im in. but do you guys live close to the freeway or sumthin? because my car gets warmed be4 im even out of my neihborhood,(not more then 2 min of dricing) But in regards to shifting , the car does waht it has to do in order to increase temprature, its not going to hurt it do be in 4th but i woudlent be pulling 3000 rpms 90mph on the highway on a cold car that cant be too good

btw..........i am really digging that burgandy color on our max =)

YES....but not what Sarah thinks They are Nissan fogs but I had to install them. The didn't come with my car but are an option. Here is the part that will get sarah. These are "GXE" fogs. They are NOT the "SE" fogs. The se....as nice as they are, are too big. The "gxe" fogs are just as wide, but not as tall. They are more slimline looking but still have that factoy look. If you really like em you can probably just by the gxe fogs and mount em where yours are.....the harness should just plug in.

BTW: Ruby red rocks

Tranny

OK, on my car, the transmission will shift into overdrive when cold, but the torque convertor will NOT lock-up until the engine warms up and I drive several miles.

wow sarah your car takes a while to warm up. my car warms up within a mile of slow driving, like 25 or so. but my heater doesnt kick in for another 10 minutes, haha but that cause i have low coolant some poeple have claimed. ill get that fixed soon. but yea i notice my tranny doesnt shift into 4th until its warm also, but i usually just kep OD off anyways on my way to school.

btw: how do you feel the torque converter, what does it do?

Well my car warms up pretty fast it's just the tranny that takes longer to warm up...my mechanic said this was completely normal. I got a separate cooler installed & a temp sensor. He said that if I wanted it to kick into OD quicker (like immediately) he can bypass the sensor & it will do it, but it doesn't bother me right now, plus soon it will be warm & shouldn't take as long. I know the TC is kicking in because my RPM drops about 300, that's how I know when its fully kicked in...I just watch the RPM...

Thats exactly how mine performs. It may be a 89-91 thing. The only time It wouldn't go to 4th....at any speed....was during a sub 0 drive last year...it took like a min or two of driving then it went in. That was also on 60K miles fluid. I got it change/flushed this summer.

My 92 also will shift into overdrive at any temperature. The torque convertor will not go into lockup until the transmission has been completely warmed up. It usually takes about 3 or 4 miles of freeway driving in the mornings before it locks and the rpm drops.

My 93 GXE with 100K miles has never experienced this problem. At least not until last week when I moved from Houston to Green Bay, WI. I didn't even have the problem when I lived in Chicago. It seems to only be a problem when the mercury hits the low single digits. The transmission will stay in third until about five minutes after the engine hits normal oprerating temperature. I can not tell you how relieved I am to here that this phenomenom is normal, as conveyed by the other postings. Thanks.
