Timing Belt History

Just bought a '90 for my son 2-months ago. The car is in very good conditioned and looks like it was serviced by a dealer. Not sure when timing belt was last changed. Does anyone know is Nissan has a national data base that records repair and maintance info based on VIN numbers? Thanks

Re: Timing Belt History

That would be great but I do not think such a thing exists. Best bet is to try a dealer in the area which you bought the car. A lot of times people will go to a place other than the dealer because service fees are 20-$30/hr at the dealer. How many miles are on the car? Take the belt covers off and check it yourself. This sounds easy but could take a novice 4 hours to complete.

when in doubt change it out.
pay for a t-belt job now or pay for a new motor later.

change it. You don't want to end up like my friend and his A4. Did you knmow there are 5 valves per cylinder in those? Well, his has 5 bent valves per cylinder... When in doubt, change it.

I went through the same thing, bought the car which was well maintained but could not find out when the timing belt had been changed. Cost me around $350 if I remember correctly (changed the water pump too). Ther mechanic said the belt on there was fine. Wasted money? Nah, the peace of mind I received with the amount of traveling I was doing was worth it! And now I know when it will be due again...
