Question regarding rough ride w/ my GXE

I’ve got a question that maybe someone might be able to help me with. I’ve got a ‘94 Maxima GXE that I’ve had for a little over 2 years now. It’s got roughly 93,000 miles on it, and it hasn’t really given me any problems until lately (last couple of weeks).

It’s starting to ride pretty rough lately. My car has been shaking and rattling during the ignition & throughout the entire ride - as well as my “Check Engine” light going on & off over the past couple of weeks (lately more on than off). Also, my acceleration has been pretty sluggish from an idle position, and I’ve noticed some occasional slight knocking down beneath the car when I accelerate from an idled position.

I don’t have that vast of a knowledge about vehicles, and I was wondering what the problem might be, and if it can be fixed w/ relative ease or if it will take a lot of maintenance and money to fix? (I’ve already thrown about $800 into repairs about 6 months ago[DISC BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED & REWIRING DUE TO THE PREVIOUS OWNER]). Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

this could be minor, could be major..
sounds like youv'e got several problems though...

1. at 90k miles, it's past time to replace the struts. do NOT buy nissan struts for the GXE. they suck. get either SE struts or go aftermarket. KYB or Tokico. they'll run you $300 or so.

2. how long has it been since a tuneup?
if you don't know the last time the timing belt was changed, then now it the time to do it.
replace the spark plugs. they're cheap. about 2 bucks each. see what that does.
replace your plug wires and distributor cap. they're ready for it too.

3. engine mounts. by 100k, the front and rear engine mounts are usually shot. this may be causing the noise in the engine bay. they're abou t$60 each.

also, let the car idle at night in the dark and look very closely for spark jumping from the wires, even down around the plugs.
