Emergency, Anyone With Alot Of Tranny Knowledge?!

"THE LONGSHOT"

(The reason for this post is that im asking for your opinion/Help/Guess on my situation because its going to be at least 5 days till i can seek a profesional opinion, thats not a long wait, but to me, right now.. gonna feel like 5 years & also i'm clueless so mabee i can get at least a better idea for now..(somone tell me its not the "Differential").. so i can relax a little till i know for sure...(i'm sure many went through somthin similar to my problem..)

I'll Make my story short, number one.. i love all maximas, number two i love my car (Mint 89'Maxima SE AUTOMATIC), besides the fact that my car is mint mechanically, i just had a Tranny cooler & Valve body mod installed TWO days ago, the car was PERFECT until today when i let a so called good friend borrow it for a few hours, at first thought nothing.... THEN i went to drive it (HERES THE PROBLEM), a ugly clanking noise, (Example: (OverDrive off), in 3rd gear on parkway if i give it gas, let off, give it gas, let off, etc, that's pretty much when it's most noticable, being very mechanical myself (i think) it either feels like bad motor mounts, a bad axel (Oh god, please be an axel!!) or the.... DIFFERENTIAL (Please no!!)... i have no idea what was done to the car because he's denying it, i would guess worst case scenerio would be that he neutral dropped it.. i really dont know that much about transsmissions so i dont know if that could blow the "diff." or whatever... the reasons why this seams serious to me and why i seem like a nut case is because my car is my world! and im not even close to being rich... ($400 Valve Body Mod/2 days old(WASTED) + cost of new "diff." or trans. or ???= Depression, anger, Murder, etc.

P.s. "no witnesses, no proof, MY PROBLEM"

I'm askin anyone with an opinion or thought or similiar problem, etc... PLEASE GIVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON MY SiTUATION...

-This Sucks!! & THANK YOU TO ANYONE THAT HELPS ME...
(I'm really not crazy........... Yes i am!!....)

dont sound like an axle and i dont think that a diffenential can go out and the car be still drivable even if it did i think it would only make noise around a turn i would guess motor or tranny mount you should be able to check those there prety easy to replace

I feel your pain I've been working on my car for 4 days sometimes in pouring rain with no luck. If my car dies on me I'll start screaming to the Heavens...."NOOOOO DON'T TAKE MY CAR, TAKE ME!"

step 1. collect tools.
step 2. jack up car.
step 3. crawl under car.
step 4. look around.

As mentioned differential comes into play when turning corners, did you happen to notice if the noise get worst while turning corners and going on/off gas. It sounds like a bushing problem, more so eng/trans mounts and control arms. 3rd gens have been known to wear out control arm bushing (I'm slowly watching mine degrade away) As you mentioned you seem to be mechanically incline, so getting under there and checking for worn bushings shouldn't be a problem.

And more importantly, how's your relationship with your friend and how's is character. Has he been known to dog out his own car or even rental cars. If he isn't known to do things like that, I guess you can believe him

Engine mounts are a possibility. But check the fluid level, ya never know. Is the fluid fresh?
