'94 Maxima RPM jumping and stalling
'94 Maxima RPM jumping and stalling
Hello guys,
My girlfriend has a '94 Maxima GXE Auto approximately 75,000 Miles that has been giving us a weird problem. Usually when driving slowly or stopping at a light the engines RPM will dip very lower and it will shake and sometimes stall. This even happens when the car is just idling soemtimes. We have taken it to a local mechanic who did a full tuneup (distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, ignition wires, spark plugs, pcv valve, air filter), but the problem is still here. The other day the car would not start (engine was cranking but it would not start), the same mechanic said this was a bad contact in the ignition system. After this was fixed the car still has the RPM problem. The mechanic thought it was a bad O2 sensor but now thinks the problem is definitely electrical. We are getting a little bit frustrated and this is getting to be expensive. I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks in advance.

Alas, welcome to the club. I have a 92SE 5 speed that I have had virtually the same problem-while idling, it will sporadically dip down and sometimes stall. While driving, I seem to hit a 'flat spot' and the car will jerk and sometimes die. Many, MANY others on this forum have had a similar problem and there does not seem to be one common solution. Some suggestions are replacing the ignition coils (VERY expensive), replacing the Throttle Position Sensor (I just did that this morning and it did NOT work), replacing the o2 Sensor, replacing the MAF Sensor, etc. Good luck to you.
