R-134a retrofit

hi
i retrofitted my 1992 se cuz the lowside line had a leak in it. The 134a isnot as cold as the r12 but its still very acceptable. the compressor will get louder cuz its a thinner freon making it run at higher temps.
You are supposed to change o rings if you have a calsonic compressor. but i didnt and it works fine. My best advice if you maximas r12 ac is working but is slightly undercharged get a 100$ worth of r12 it will be much colder and more effiecient. You can use 134a , im using it now but if gived a choice id go back>

I'm new to this forum but I thought I should mention there is a company "autorefrigants.com" that sells an aftermarket replacement for r-12 that is better than r-134a, and arguably r-12. It's called es-12a. I recently ordered some for my Integra. I belong to another message board for Integras and alot of the guys over there use this stuff and love it.

Duracool can replace r12 or r134a depending on the type you buy, but if you're in the states you're supposed to retrofit to r134a first (the fittings anyway) evac all the freon, then refill with Duracool or some such madness..check the EPA website. Personally, if I was low on freon, I'd just get a six ounce can (or two), a hose and top up my system - the Duracool can mix safely with Freon or r134. Just be aware that Duracool(and other HC (hydrocarbon) refridgerants) are banned in some states - I think. From what I can figure out, HC's are banned because they are just that hydrocarbons - like propane, and legislators are afraid of things blowing up. However, it appears that the stuff is no more flammable than freon or r134a. Who knows? All I know is I threw a can and a half into my system, and it's never blown so cold.
