: After talking with craig B, we have found some interesting stuff. Well first off the VG30DE and VE30DE cams have the same valve timing, duration and intake/exhaust opening/closing is the same. The overlap caused by the VTC however is 28 degrees on and 8 degrees off for the VE30DE where as the VG30DE is 18 degrees on and 8 degrees off. Also the VE has less cam height but longer valves. So if you used VG30DE cams you would have 0.15" more lift. Now the ISKY cams I'm getting has .023" more lift and the 280 cam for VG30E from motorsport auto has .435" compared to stock .394". So if anyone uses VG30DE cams watch for valve to piston contact, but unless the timing isn't set right there shouldn't be a problem (I hope).

: Nismo8780: how does the valve specs compare?
: Nismo8780: like length, diameter and stuff
: gtwhoo: "D" 1.378-1.386; 1.201-1.209
: gtwhoo: "L" 4.2405-4.3602
: gtwhoo: ; 4.0335-4.0531
: Nismo8780: hmm
: gtwhoo: "d" .2352-.2354; .2344-.2346
: Nismo8780: okay
: gtwhoo: angle is same
: gtwhoo: "T" .0453-.0571; .0571-.0689
: Nismo8780: so the VE has bigger valve head diameter
: gtwhoo: sure
: Nismo8780: The VE has longer valves
: Nismo8780: the stem diameter is the same
: gtwhoo: cool
: Nismo8780: how about the valve springs?
: gtwhoo: free height 1.7768
: gtwhoo: pressure 54.6, 120.4 at 1.059
: gtwhoo: limit pressure 48.7,107.4 at 1.059
: gtwhoo: out of square .079
: Nismo8780: okay
: Nismo8780: how about the hydrolic lifter?
: gtwhoo: outer diam .6685-.6690
: gtwhoo: inner diam .6693-.6701
: gtwhoo: clearance .0003-.0016
: Nismo8780: damn they are half teh width of the VG30DE lifters!
: gtwhoo: cool
: Nismo8780: VG lifters are outer diam .6278-.6282
: Nismo8780: inner diam 0.6299-.6304
: gtwhoo: I see
: Nismo8780: clearance is 0.0017-0.0026
: Nismo8780: also what is the compression numbers
: Nismo8780: the VG is 173psi at 300rpm
: Nismo8780: min of 128psi, difference limit of 14psi
: gtwhoo: 183psi at 300rpm
: gtwhoo: min 142
: gtwhoo: difference 14
: Nismo8780: The VG30DE is 186psi/300rpm, 142psi min and 14psi difference
: Nismo8780: the VG30DETT is the same as the VG30E's is
: gtwhoo: cool
: Nismo8780: lets compare the pistons
: Nismo8780: teh VG30DE is "A"
: Nismo8780: grade 1 = 3.4242-3.4246
: gtwhoo: same
: Nismo8780: grade 2= 3.4246-3.4250
: gtwhoo: same
: Nismo8780: grade 3 = 3.4250-3.4254
: gtwhoo: same
: Nismo8780: .25 oversize
: Nismo8780: 3.43340-3.4360
: gtwhoo: yup
: Nismo8780: 0.50 oversize 3.4439-3.4459
: Nismo8780: cool
: gtwhoo: same
: Nismo8780: the "a" is 1.890
: gtwhoo: "a" = .65
: Nismo8780: piston pin hole diameter is 0.8656-0.8661
: gtwhoo: yup
: Nismo8780: are you sure for "a"?
: gtwhoo: it says 16.5(.650)
: Nismo8780: for my VG30E its 47(1.85)
: gtwhoo: that's weird; everything else is the same
: Nismo8780: damn
: Nismo8780: piston clearance
: Nismo8780: 0.0006-0.0014 non turbo
: gtwhoo: hehe
: gtwhoo: same
: Nismo8780: 0.00010-0.0018 for turbo
: gtwhoo: no turbo here =(
: Nismo8780: but the VG30E is the same
: Nismo8780: as VG30DETT

As anyone installed the VG30DE cams into a VE since this post was originally wrote? Or are the gains too low for the hassle or possible piston to valve contact. Or are the VE guys only left to regrind their cams?

So, are the valve springs the same or at least the same size?

So, if you advance the timing on a VG 3-5 degrees or so, is contact a real threat? Stock timing is at 15 degrees, advancing it to 20 could create contact or am I not reading this right?

this is talking about the VE (max 92-94SE) and the VG30DE (not VG30E)

when you advance timing, you advance ignition timing. that's completely different from cam timing. bad cam timing is what will cause piston/valve contact. bad ignition timing will cause detonation and ruin your engine slower, but still kill it.

Candiman, Bryan H installed the VG30DE cams in his VE, and even after dozens of hours of dyno tuning, he only got a few hp out of them. not worth it, considering you almost have to tear the engine apart to install them.

I do believe Bryan H put the 300zx cams in his VE, but according to him it was way too much custom machining for little to no gains.

JohnnyMax, there's no machining needed.. the VG30DE cams will drop right in.. they're just a little different on the lift/duration, so the engine will run different.

archivers strike again. It would be alot easier to just send some stock cams to ISKY or crower to be reground. Also expect to do some research in the FSM and be prepaired to answer or try to answer questions about the camshaft specs and you will need a dyno to. Otherwise you have no baseline to improve upon. I believe from ISKY you can get your cams reground for $150 each or so. VG30E cams are like $150-160 BTW.
