New Guy, Some questions

Well since the search function isn't working I can't seem to find the info that I'm looking for. I am restoring my Dad's 91 Maxima 4DSC. It's a red, 5-speed, leather interior, with the bose stereo. First off the bose radio is shot. It comes on but no sound is produced. The car also has the security light blinking all the time. The car was parked outside 5-6 years ago and hasn't been moved started or even touched in all that time. Today I started tearing it apart. I'm draining all the fluids and tearing at least the top end of the engine apart. I want to know if the security system is in the radio? If not then where is it and how do I kill it?

The rest of what I want to know is what are the basic upgrades that I should do while I've got everything apart. Most of the later year 3.0 cars had more power, why? Better intake manifolds, cams, exhaust manifolds? can I just add those to this engine? The motor in the car has less that 10k on it. It was replaced by nissan not too long before the power stearing died and the starter kill kicked in. For some reason my dad didn't fix it and I want to do it as a fun project.

I have alot of experience working on cars and I have a bachlors degree in electrical engineeering, so all the electrical stuff is no problem. I don't have the shop manual for the car so I'm hopeing some of you guys can help me out.

As far as the security, you can disable the alarm. It's under the steering wheel just unplug it and that should do it.

First of all, welcome. As for the security system and the radio, they are not integrated. If you have a problem with the security light blinking, you should look at the door pins, the trunk latch, or the hood pin on the side where your overflow reservoir is. Probably one of those is defective, broken, or shorted out.
I'd recommend just replacing the radio with a decent aftermarket radio. But if your dad is a purist, and insists on keeping the factory radio, take a look at the speakers. They are individually amplified and although it's rare to see it, maybe ALL the amps went out at once. You could bypass them and put in aftermarket speakers, or just bypass them, throw in a speaker to test output, and go at it from there. The bigger problem, though, might be that your outputs may have gone out in the radio. There's a couple of ways to go in that regard.
While you've got the top end of the engine apart, you might wanna check your injectors and coils out. And am I correct in seeing that your engine has less than 10k on it?

Yes the engine has less than 10k on it. He paid like 6 grand at the nissan dealership to have a brand spanking new motor put in after the timing belt snapped and took out some of the valves. Like I said not too long after the engine was replaced the power steering started going. So he was playing with it and the security system went wonky and wouldn't let him start it. I don't know why he didn't figure it out and fix it then but he didn't. So now I'm going to do it.

We are planning a suspension and brake upgrade as well. He's not as in to the HP upgrades as I am but he definetly wants better braking and handling. I think I can get away with upgrades to power if they are pretty inexpensive. I know we are adding a CAI and underdrive pully. We'll see what else I can get him to pay for.
