Cutting shifter

I was just wondering if cutting the stock shifter is a good idea. I think I remember that some people have done this, what were the results? If so, is it just cutting it with a hacksaw and re-threadding it, or is there more to it? Thanks for any advice!

Cutting a couple inches out of the middle and welding it back up will eleminate hassles with threading it again. I've done this for several 300zx's.
