Trans / TC whine

Trans / TC whine
Fellow Maxima Faithful:
I'm new here, so please forgive if this has been asked/answered before. I looked through as many threads as I could without the search feature working.
I have a 92 GXE with 160k mi. It has been and continues to be the best car I've ever owned. Recently it has developed a whine from the tranny or TC. It is perfectly smooth and quiet in park or neutral, but when shifted into drive or reverse it produces a moderate whine or grind noise. This noise increases in pitch but not volume with increased RPM. (Sort of sounds like an old AM radio in a car with bad plug wires.) When it's not under an acceleration load - such as at cruising speed - it is nearly inaudible. It makes this noise in all gears and is loudest in the lower RPM ranges of each gear and under an acceleration load.
Any ideas? Could it be the TC without any slipping?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice!

Well, I guess I'll be visiting my friends at the Nissan shop next week.
If anyone else has experienced this condition and had it diagnosed and/or repaired successfully, please post a reply.

Definitely something in the tranny or TC. Most likely the planetary gears in the tranny? Ever replaced tranny before? Probably time to get a new tranny... I would try to stay away from the STEALERship... find a reputable tranny shop.
