Auto Tranny Situation......Any suggestions are more then welcome....

Ok this is the deal. I have a 89 Max SE auto and the transmission is pretty much shot. I have been driving it with OverDrive off for the past couple months or so because it's defienitly not cheap to get a transmission fixed whichever way you do it. It seems like the horse power on my car just sucks because it takes so long to accelerate.

Now, I was going to do the auto to 5spd swap and I still might but now I am just looking to get it fixed and being able to drive normally and accelerate normally and push the car when I want to push it and not have the rpm's almost redlining and then jumping even farther before slowing changing gears, all this with OverDrive on.

What is my best bet here? I want it soon as possible but for the less money basically. Please, everyones input is more then welcome, I am so sick of this tranny, I wanna cry and scream!!!

Thank you all.

there's really nothing that can be done short of a rebuild. that was my only option as swapping a 5spd into mine would've cost too much.

Yeah, once the tranny goes you are really stuck with figuring out how valuable the car is to you. If you know what you are doing then the 5speed replacement seems to be overal cheaper but extremely difficult. Since your tranny seems to function a little I would take it to AAMCO or some transmission shop and get them to give you an estimate. It might be they could save your tranny with only replacing some parts instead of a total tranny rebuild but it is still going to cost you. You could also try to find a replacement tranny at a junk yard and use that. If you are going to be paying someone else to do the work I would be ready to pony up some cash.

Depending on where you live, try giving Jeff @ MAXIMUM Tuning a call (516)676-8470, they have a great price on the auto. to 5spd swap or a rebuild for your auto. Talk to him he will have answers for you...

i went through the same crap. rebuildin' ur tranny will at least cost $1200 or so. i had to get mine rebuilt but i didn't pay that much since i worked for a local shop i did the work of takin' and puttin' up my tranny in my car about 8 times just to get it to work properly. i just paid $300 for all parts and my friend at the shop did the labor. i would say to just get ur self the 5-speed tranny with all the parts from a junkyard and do the conversion. thats just my .02 cents right there.

Ok so give me an honest amount on how much the 5spd would cost so I have a real good idea .

Plus a rebuilt auto tranny will put you back at least a grand.

Okk I was talking with this other guy that has a maxima and he told me that if I were to get a used tranny put in my car and I pushed it at all like "hard spirited" driving I guess you would call it, that I would blow the transmission. Like if I slammed on the gas alot and the car takes off with the overdrive situation if you know what I mean, I will end up blowing up the transmission. Now is this true, or this guy just trying to scare me or does he not know what he's talking about. He made it souond like if I push the car at all, it's going to blow the tranny. Whats up!!??!!
