BAD LUCK! -- water pump going

I haven't even received my ordered window regulator and damn it if the cooling system goes to crap on me.

I drove a little ways today since it is nice out (no driver window in right now) and when I went back out to the car...antifreeze on the ground. Not a lot, but obviously not a good sign. On the short (maybe one mile) trip home, the temp skyrockets. I checked it out and coolant is leaking from around the water pump. It's isn't making any unusual noise, so I assume either the gasket went, or the blades have had it on the pump. Either way I'm going to replace the water pump, since I have to take it off to get the gasket.

Has anyone ever done a water pump on a VE30DE?

How big of a job is it and how long did it take?

thanks for your input.

Oh... you're in for a world of fun! I haven't done one, but reading the write-ups on it, I'd say this should be an adventure.

continued. . .

brief overview
1) a few notes, we obviously removed the radiator hose
2) also removed bracked from a/c lines so we could move them around.
3)had toremove all 3 drive belts after this to get to the damn thing so you might as well plan o nreplaceing your drivebelts if they are in rough shape, a good time to do it.
4)removed [edit: crank shaft pulley, not drive shaft], used a large socket and an impact hammer to remove it

5)then used a puller to remove the center shaft that held the pulley tightly. this thing goes in through an oil gasket..unfortunately it was late at night for us and we couldn't go get a new oil gasket from nissan so we had to be very careful not to damage it..but it is HIGHLY recommended that yo ureplace this gasket as you go in.
6) also any timing chain maintenance would be good to do at this time.

7) remove water pump pulley, and then water pump

edit: splash shields under the passenger front wheel will also need to be removed

Advice: find a motorhead or a shade-tree mechanic that will work for a 12 pk of beer and a pizza (after it is done of course), while you help, and all will be well...

oh yea! just remembered..even though we had to remove the crank shaft to get the waterpump out through the bottom we still had to dislodge the engine about an inch to get the waterpump in and our by a peice of the frame ...very annoying

using a 2x4 we lodged it up in the side and dad pulled hard while i worked the waterpump out through the tiny little puzzling mess

Thanks for all the input (especially Menel)

All that work for a part that is under $100 -- go figure!

I don't think I am going to bother with this one -- too much of a headache. I guess I'll have to see what kind of laid off mill worker I can round up to do it on the cheap.

I removed my pump through the top. If you pay for the search feature, you'll find a lot more info on doing the job.

Mine took about 6 hours and I let the gasket stuff cure overnight. For some reason it just fell right out the bottom. Of course it did take the next 4 hours to get it back in, but hey. I ended up getting it completely stuck once and had to hammer it out with a wood block. Equally strangely, it just dropped right in the top after I f'd with it enough. This whole thing sucked because I had a fresh bead of RTV all along the pump.

If what timmyrig says is true, then you can remove the 2 tranny mounts and with a hydraulic jack gently let the tranny down a few inches. That should give you the room you need. Good luck
