how many people would be interested in JDM engines?
A friend of mine in Japan owns a car parts business and we recently discussed Maxima engines and their availability over there...
He can hook us up with some regular VG30s, VE30DEs, VG30Turbos and VE30D turbos as well (most have 20-30K miles only)...but we dont know if people would really be iterested, or what sort of customs problems we would face if we import them...does anybody know what rules and regulations govern importing an eninge or shipping costs etc.
Would u guys be interested??
He can also hook us up with JDM parts (lights etc)
lemme know what you guys think...

but the thing is the JDM spec 3rd gens are RWD. the engine is mounted differently. so it wouldnt matter if oyu could get them it would cost alot to fab it to fit right... i would be interested if oyu could get the rear ends for them too, then i would be interested.

what are you talking about!?!?! there is no such thing as a "JDM" 3rd gen Maxima...there is no Japanese version of Maxima with a VG30 at all! and even so, the RWD version of the VG30E(300zx) fits fine in the Maxima with no mounting modification! try to have your info remotely right before you post!

from what I understand all the emission stuff has to be removed. The engine has to be technically a replacement engine for importation purposes. I believe the engine has to be pretty much the same as a USDM engine. SO if the turbo engines were JDM only and they aren't the same as the 300Z motor then you probably cant get them in the country. Customs doesn't care that we wan't faster cars all they care about are some BS emmision rules and that they are "bolt in replacements".

I would probably guess that you could find a loophole if you imported them for "off-road use only."
There are no emmissions for race cars.
This is really just me thinking out loud. I have NO CLUE on the screwed up laws and regulations in this country.
All I can think of is that I used to own a Mustang GT and you can buy an H-pipe with no cats that is for "off-road use only." Everyone that lives where there are no emmissions...err has a "track-only car" has one. Wouldn't the same principle apply to JDM stuff???
I mean, it isn't "legal" on the street, but my Maxima is going to "be trailered and used on the track only."

I've put two JDM engines from two different sources into my vehicles. There is NO problem importing JDM engines into the US. The importers are not liable to insure the suitabilty to US regs. The end user is responsible for making sure the engine complies with any applicable regs.
The only requirement to importing engines into the US is to have enough cash to "buy" (actually rent) a shipping container. Most importers will fill that container with a variety of engines they think they can sell. Some ship just the engines, others will ship "front cuts" which contain everything from the firewall forward (engine, trans, axles, ecu and wiring harness usually). These usually cost 2-3 times what just the engine does.
There's no mystery, just simple economics. Anyone with a contact in Japan can set it up.
BTW, one really cool thing about buying a JDM front cut is that the Japanese REALLY love their high tech gadgets. So many of those that make it over here come with all the goodies.
