Motor Mounts??

OK, in a nutshell:
Four weeks ago I had a pretty descent 91 Maxima. Then it would not move forward anymore (or backwards for that matter). The transmission shop said it needed a new torque converter. $850 later it had a new torque converter. The day it came out of the shop it handled like bull at the rodeo, bucking all over the place. Back to the transmission shop. They said that a solinoid (forgive the spelling) had locked up. $250 later it had a new one of those. Now it is making a terrible noise when you give it gas. The transmission shop says that the motor mounts are broken and need replacement. They say that when you give it gas it raises the engine, therefore separating the exhaust from the engine, therefore causing the noise. I paid $3K for this car nine months ago and have so far put almost $1600 into it for repairs. It has 142K miles on it and, other than the above mentioned problems, is a good car. Any input on this. Am I getting screwed by this transmission place? Could the new torque converter and the solonoid have caused this engine mount issue?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Desperate in Alabama...

Dunno about that noise, my engine mounts were broke and i didnt get any noise. It just kicked like a **** when it shifted. The mounts themselves are like 90 bucks plus labor. Expensive part.

First things is....

Why the heck would they let the car out the door knowig that the motor mounts (or even one mount) was broken. It's one of those things where they have it apart to that point already, it would only be the additional cost of the part to install it. They should have at least told you.

Terrible noise as in loud exhaust? Not unless the motor violently raising off it's perch broke something in the process. Your exhaust is bolted and clamped together, sealed. There is a certain amount of flex available, but probably not enough to withstand the motor jumping around in the engine compartment.

You should have heard loud banging noises from the engine compartment before it started making the loud exhaust noise.

Take your car somewhere else and see what they say.
