possibly buying a 92 SE 5-speed... need some info
Hey guys, I went and look at a 92 5-speed yesterday, and have a question. The guy admitted over the phone that the car needs a clutch. So when I get there he starts it up and I hear the ticking (I am assuming that its the VTC). He tells me that its got something to do with the clutch pin that goes into the transmission, because it didnt do it before his clutch went. He says that his mechanic welded a piece to it so that he could get enough out of the clutch to drive it home. He also claims that it has a rebuilt transmission, but when they rebuilt it they did not put a new clutch in.
Questions:
1---How badly could his mechanic have messed up the clutch pin?
2---Could this noise be the clutch pin?
3---Approx. how much is a clutch job in parts?
4---Is this guy full of it?
PS The car has 175K miles on it, and he is asking 1000$ for it.
Thanks for all of your help,
Jimmy

HHHMMMM,
the noise could be the release bearing against the pressure plate, it may not be clearing all the way if the linkage has been modified. not sure why it would create a tapping noise though. From what you posted I'd say the guy doesn't know or is hiding something. Can you talk to his mechanic directly? On second thought, what kind of mechanic would 'weld' a temporary fix???

I'm going to have my dad go look at it and see what he thinks. The guy can't get the car into gear once it is started, but if he starts it in 1st it drives, and I couldnt detect any slippage, although it was on gravel. If it is just the clutch, is the car worth $1000?
Thanks for the input
