Disappearing antifreeze

Disappearing antifreeze
Is there any way a car with a full resivour of antifreeze can end up with a dry radiator after sitting at the airpot for 10 days?
Last week, I fley back home and grabbed my car from the parking lot. As I got on the highway, I noticed my temp gugage was reading close to maximum. The airport in Sacramento is in the middle of nowhere and it was about midnight so I couldn't stop. I turned on the heat on high and slowly made my way home hoping the engine didn't seize from the heat.
Anyway, I'm curiou what the cause could be. THe water pump was replaced last year and there are no leaks I can find. I filled up the radiator and resivour again the next day and have been driving for a week with no problems and the overflow tank still reads at maximum.
Why would coolant just disappear like that?
