I got gas

91 octane is the recommended gas for maximas, correct? I hope so cause that's what I just put in. (first fill-up)

So I was wondering what you people are paying for the higher octane stuff in your neck of the woods, wherever that may be.

At my local gas station I filled up (15 gallons) with 91 oct. @ 1.49 a gallon. 89 octain (ethanol-good for Iowa baby) was 10 cents cheaper. Would 89 be bad for or do harm to my car? Also what are you guys paying and putting in? Talk amongst yourselves

The manual states 87 octane and up, so 89 is perfectly fine.

I always get the plus from Hess(89 octane).

My GXE (VG) manual says 87 or higher. 87 is about $1.90/gal (was like $2.20/gal during those price peaks a few months ago), with 89 10 cents more, and 91 20 cents more

depending on what type motor you have. vg will run on 87 but it could bennifit from higher octane also
ve maxima's are supposed to run with 91 to avvoid pinging and yes 93 is better for mileage and less depoist, deposit can make the max run sluggish and then cost more to repair. running and paying for 91+ will save you money in the long run

VGs only require 87, but run slightly better on higher stuff.. unless you're heavily modded, don't mess with more than 89 or 91.. you're wasting your money and the car can actually LOSE power with it...

if you've got a VE, then you need to run better stuff.. mine's fairly modded, and I run 93 octane every day in it.. it STILL pings on 90+ degree days.. thinking about that, I'd better retard my timing a tad for the summer so I don't melt a piston.

octane rating

generally, octane should be as high as possible. cheaper, lower octane gas burns easily and quickly and can detonate within the engine when it shouldn't. lower octane typically renders less powerful combustion, burns quicker, makes the engine ping especially under heavier load/acceleration, and you end up wasting money.

lots of other factors figure in as well: altitude (higher = less ambient oxygen = less octane need), humidity (high = less octane need), temperature (high = more octane need), engine compression under boost (xtra 1 lb. of boost = 1 point higher octane).

I wish that gas were as cheap as you guys up on the mainland. Here in the 808 (Hawaii) I put in 92 octane and it cost $2.10 a gallon!! Even 87 octane isn't as cheap as your guys 92/93 octane!! To fill up it costs any where from $28-30 a tank.

Yeah its some serious cash for gas but then again there are not too many places out there that you can pretty much live on just shorts and t-shirts, swim all year round.....did I mention the hotties on the beach in the little bikini's? Sure some things are crazy expensive but that is the price you pay for living in paradise. Its hard but someone has to do it......might as well be me.

Okay I'm sorry about the girls on the beach in bikini's thing.....look on the bright side......at least gas is cheaper where you live. But girls in bikinis..........cheaper gas........I can't believe that I am comparing. Girls all the way!! The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side!!

Feel free to make a trip out to Hawaii!! We need all the tourism we can get!! Bring the family, solo, what ever!! Good excuse to come to Hawaii to sit on the beach and see all those beautiful women....did I mention bikinis? Okay, okay I evil!! But seriously come out to Hawaii!!

over here in nz we have 91,96 and 98 grades of gas. i dont know how that compares to US grades but with my VE i have advanced timing so some random amount and i can hear pinging with 91..

96 is currently 1.069 per litre
98 4 cents more, 91 5 cents less.

i use 96 at the moment because i cant be bothered with the extra for 98 for no benefit.

i have heard, heresay, that in the USDM, the octane numbers are actually "dumbed down" from "actual" numbers. here we have 91 as "premium." whereas, actually, really, technically, it is 98. as there is "research octane number" and "motor octane number."

but this comes to you via the great rumor express!
