Got my Max last week...

Turns out it was a 91 SE, 193,500 miles. Runs great, new automatic tranny, inspected, taxes, title and tags for about $1200.

After reading a bit, I'm going to do the following:

Check/replace fuel filter.
Check/replace brake fluid, rotors and pads.
Check/replace air filter.
Drain and refill antifreeze/cooling system.
Install a tranny cooler.
Replace spark plugs and plug wires with NGK parts, along with distributor cap and rotor.
Replace timing belt, water pump, tensioner and thermostat.

Anything anyone else can suggest? I think that's a fairly good list of what needs to be checked/replaced. Maybe even put this in a sticky for n00bs.

Anyways, as for the tranny cooler, I think I read somewhere that you can pick up one from Autozone or something and that should be sufficient. Any truth to that statement?

Also, I'm assuming that you can go to the nearest Autozone and pick up the parts for the timing belt stuff as well as the fuel filter? And has anyone used SpeedBleeders on their Max and if so what size do you need?

And finally, I was looking at the interior lights the other night while I was driving, and the foglight switch as well as the gauge dimmer switch don't light up when the headlight switch it turned on. Not sure if its related, but I can't see all the writing for the HVAC controls either, but I'm not sure if thats supposed light up either. Or maybe none of them are supposed to be lit and everything is fine. Either way, can someone shed some light on that for me?

Thanks!

Matt L.

Pick up a Haynes manual for our cars, or better yet a factory service manual and you will have all the projects you could ever dream of when it comes to repair. As for the tranny cooler, any Hayden model from Pep Boys or Autozone, can't remember which one, should work. Try to get a smaller one, since most of them are made for trucks towing stuff and it can cool your tranny too much in the winter.
