1990 Max GXE Trans axles Comments Please

1990 Maxima GXE--100K miles. What is average life of trans axles?

Boot on left inner finally gave out. Have removed and disassembled unit It does not show any adverse signs of wear or damage. Was driven less than 1 hour with failed boot. Car is driven approx 500 miles a month. Am reluctant to replace stock unit with any other unless absolutely necessay. New nissan units @$1000 ea not an option! Raxle units about $125 for left side and $150 for right side. Previous threads indicate they are good. Bought car new in 1990 and it has been Great. I am retired on fixed income.

Would greatly appreciate any comments. Thanks

look at it this way...the stock boots/axles lasted 100K. replacing them w/ a quality unit (raxles?) would provide another 100K of service. make sure there's a decent warranty on them and you'll be good to go.

Autozone has them for $79.99 + $60 core charge. Haven't seen one yet, but it's on it's way.

Have to do one on my MR2 also. BAH! That one's fomr NAPA cause AZ doesn't even offer one for that car.....

Napa has them for $65 exchange per side here in Houston. These are remanufactured units. Raxle units are supposedly new.
Anybody have any experience with either Auto Zone or Napa units?

Thanks for replies so far. Any further comments welcome. Thanks

Hey guys, little help. i just got a new tranny and it's leaking tranny fuild. the mech. saids it's leaking from the axles and that the axles are bad because they already change all the gasket because of the new tranny. he wants 165 per side with labor. i check kragen and it's 165 for both with core. so is he telling the truth and how hard is it to change the axles?
thanks

Well I had 227,000+ miles on my totaled maxima. Everything was original but the Tranny, water pump and altnator. The boots on my axles went bad at about 122,000 miles, I had Nissan replace them for me when they were doing some work for me, they have never clicked, clacked or anything. Keep in mind that maintence is cheaper than repair. Thats just my two cents.
