Radio Problem in Maxima...

My girlfriend just bought a 94 Maxima SE with the Bose radio system (tapedeck) and its doing something weird. Lights up and looks like it will come on but no sound. Then we hear a clicking noise under the driver side firewall and it will come on (sounds great when it works !). Then it shuts off whenever it wants to. I told her the car is possessed ! Could this be related to the power antena or a relay/fuse or something ? Does the radio need to be replaced ? Electrical problem ? Also anything else to worry about on this car (sure is clean)? Thanks !

I'd replace the relay, which is located in the right side kick panel area. Sounds like it's going bad.

You can just swap it out with another one from the relay box under your hood (same as fog light I think). Just use a same color one. This will verify that the relay is bad.

Re: Re: Radio Problem in Maxima...

Hey...
Looks like it is known problem...!!!
Mostly it is nothing to do with relay it self. but it is with head unit. It should power the relay when you switch on the head unit. The relay then powers the amplifier for the speakers...

There is fix if you can rewire some of wires connected to head unit...
But this is only if you have BOSE...

I have done it and works fine so far...

Let me know if any one of you wants to know..

It is a Bose radio. Well I tried to re-wire the Green/White wire coming out of the radio to a power wire (I picked the power going to the cig lighter) and it didn't help. Still no sound out of the radio. Do I need to wire it down by the relay ? Also tried a different relay, didn't help either. Am I re-wiring the right wires ? Is my radio shot ? Did I wire it wrong (I took the wire from the radio to the cig lighter bypassing the relay) Thanks for the help !

Well you picked right Green/white wire. This wire is connected to Head unit on one end and relay on the other. Now you need to cut this wire and then connect the end which goes to Relay to Yellow/Green.

Yellow/green comes from ignition switch to Head unit. Now after this modification the yellow/green powers both relay and head unit.

Now down side of this modification is your bose amplifiers will be powered as long as ignition switch is on...!! So you will hear relay clicking when you switch off ignition...!!!

If your head unit is working fine then it will power the relay only when you switch on radio/cassette.

Hope this helps..

i had the bose cd/tape/am/fm and it would cut out w/a strange "pop". weirdest thing, it was completely ramdom when it would cut in and out and it drove me crazy for months. got a new deck and haven't had any issues since. so....
it might be a problem with your deck(keep the speakers though, they are beautiful)

I had a similar problem with the bose system. I did the rewiring stuff and there haven't been any problems so far...

I am having difficulty with the fm radio, however, as it will get very staticky after a time of sounding fine. I notice that the stereo light will flash on and off and I get a very unpleasant crackling sound.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
