How can this be

Hey,
long time lurker, first time poster.

I was driving down the road minding my own buisness when a little POS old honda CRX pulls up next to me at the light. not thinking he was going to try anything i went as usual, and then he pins it and passes me. So down the road farther we come up next to eachother once again. confident my car can take that pos i just put it to the floor and he beat me. about 100' farther up the road another red light. this time i did the old hold the brake with the left foot and pin it with the right. he beat me. and for a final time he beat me again. At that point i am way to embarassed to keep trying so i turn off the road.

His car: old yellow CRX manual, no exhaust or other dumb mods.

My car: 1994 maxima, 3L auto. stock 134 000km

Now, his car sounded stock so unless he was sucking on a damn NOS bottle how the hell could he beat me? My car also looses off the line and up to 100km/h to a 2000 ford expedition, and a 2002 GMC sierra pickup.

I need some (cheaper) ideas on how i can not get roasted by crappy cars?

It has 3 choices, power autop and comfort. it was in auto. Whenever i put it down over 3/4 it automaticly goes into power.

But i have another quick question. How much hp/tourque do these cars have stock? how easily can it be added?

Thanks,
Andy

for a start if your in a gxe then its not surprising that you got beaten, your car is not fast at all.

a vtec crx manual will move quite quickly, and if its light in weight then it has even more of an advantage.

What's a GXE have to do with anything, doesn't it have the same engine as an SE?

92-94 (the original post was a 94) there is a 30hp difference.

GXE = 160
SE = 190

Civic with 5spd = 2400 lbs/140hp = 17 lbs/hp
Max GXE with Auto = 3300 lbs/160hp = 20 lbs/hp

Civic 5spd vs Max Gxe Auto = DUH!

Thats what i thought, and if lightweight has anything to do with it then why would a 3, almost 4 ton truck be able to roast me?

Does this car have a gas rating system that retards the timing if regular is used?

err, another question. Kind of dumb.

I got the car from my grandfather who recently died. for $0.

But now i have no idea what kind it is. Is there an easy way to tell? would certain letters/number on the VIN be of any help?

Thanks,

Andy

a CRX also weighs something like 900lbs less. I wouldn't feel bad. I only mess with what I know I can have a good time with. Also, its not like the maxima is unworthy, just give it some time and look into mods.

It's STILL really simple.... DO THE MATH

Explorer with Auto = 4200lb/260hp = 16lb/hp
Max GXE with Auto = 3300 lbs/160hp = 20lbs/hp

Does this car have a gas rating system that retards the timing if regular is used?
Sort of. If it detects detonation then it retards timing. Using regular gas will get you into detonation much easier then premium.

it is an expedition, and explorors arent rated at 260hp, Most explorers had the 5.0 . the 5.4Ls are rated at 260 hp. and they weigh probbaly around 5000-5200lbs. @ 5200lbs the truck would have 20lbs/hp.

guessing from that you would think it would be close, but no. It kills me each and every time.

that's not always a solution, and 5spd VE's are hard to find nowadays.

SUV's also better gears for down low, and much more torque. I can roast quite a few cars off the line, but after mid second gear it all goes down hill (in the durango). yeah, I can toast most other SUV's (3.92 gears, trac-lok, 318ci, 31" BFG All-Terrians, etc) but still, its intake manifold is designed for low end torque, not high end, its easy for me to fix, but still.

You might also note that this board does not support street racing, and although it wasnt that serious, you still might want to be careful.

A friend of mine's 89 Maxima SE 5spd was about even with a new GMC Sierra until about 35ish mph where we started to pull pretty quickly away.

don't worry, my dads 01 Suburban can take me off the line with ease. I didn't think my GXE would be that slow with 180tq but oh well. I am not going to try and make it faster. As long as it gets me through the next couple years I'll be happy!

My brothers friend is selling me his 1988 chev s-10. 350ci, 4 speed manual tranny, adnd a detroit locker. I might swap out the locker for a limited slip tho, kinda loud around corners.
