Need Linkage info/help

OK I need some help concerning the linkage in my tranny. Here is a quote from a previous thread:

I talked to them today (the shop) and they said that they FINALLY figured out that the linkage is wearing down (or doing whatever linkage does that isnt good)So they shimmed it and are ready to have it back in the car by tonight or tomorrow. So ONE: is the linkage thing a big problem? and TWO: is shimming a good or bad thing? It sounds like they are getting sick of working on it and decided to jimmy-rig it. Any info on this issue that will help me feel better about the car is welcome.
Also, can anyone tell me what the linkage does and if it can be simply replaced? Yeah sorry I know I'm no mechanic and am kinda ignorant about all the tranny stuff. Also the search isn't up rigth now...I tried!
