Newbie question

Alright guys, I know this is kind of a newbie question, but should I be hearing a whistling noise from my stock air intake when I reach above 3500Rpm. Because I am and it kind of reminds me of my turbo and the 97 GST I use to have. Thanks

Unfortunately I can't help, but I also hear a whistling/whining noise when I hit 1500 rpms while going about 30-35 mph. My mechanic has no clue why it does that.

The same thing happened on my girlfriend's friend's Mazda. Come to find out her intake had a leak. On the Maxima, you have the accordian looking part after the MAF. On hers, this where the leak was it was rotted out (typical girl shyt, did not pay any attention to the car). You may want to root around the intake and air cleaner to see if there is an opening somewhere.

Another possibility could be the air cleaner not closed all the way. I have seen this happen when goobers from the quickie lube places change air filters. Being lazy, they sometimes only close one latch; therefore, air can leak in from the sides causing a hissing, whistling sound when air flow is adequate.

Just my 3 cents.

My K&N cone air filter intake whistles from 2000-3100, then again from 4000-5000.

Sounds cool, and I doubt that there is a leak on mine. Yours may be different.

Re: Newbie question

It's probably not your air intake but an exhaust manifold leak because one or more of your exhaust manifold studs are broken off. I (and many others) have had the same exact whistle, and sooner or later everybody on this board is going to have to deal with broken exhaust manifold studs.
