Hard as hell to find a 5-spd VE!!
Hard as hell to find a 5-spd VE!!
I see a couple of autos in my area but I keep telling myself to hold out for a manual. I test drove one today (92se 5-spd 98k) and fell in love with the stick.. see my current Max is auto and the only stick I drive is my bro's 1st yr Miata and though it's a fun little car the stick is cranky and sensitive whereas the Max's seems more fluid and not as picky about certain RPMs for power.
The reason I didn't get the 92se was because the guy treated it like sh*t, seats were all ripped, interior blackened from years of dirt, 4th gen alloys that had black paint on em, cracks in front bumper, ext paint job was basically junkyard quality, sun damage/big tears in the top of the *dashboard*, etc... (the list does go on and on).
It was just sickening, and a shame.
I need a new car asap and if I can't find one it will have to be automatic.
Any help or advice is most welcome.

I just bought a 1992 Maxima SE 5spd white today.
I also just took the water pump out of it today, and will drop the tranny tommarrow.
oh well.
Good luck on the search, sadly, as soon as you buy, a bunch will come on the market, its just the way it is

Yes, finding VE 5spds are hard as hell. I myself was looking for one for a while. Actually, I was looking for either a VE or VQ w/5spd or a 300ZX 5spd. Finally, I found a '92 SE with 5spd in Richmond (about 75 miles from me) for $2000. I could not pass. The best part was that it was only a few miles from my girlfriend's job.
The engine, tranny, clutch are in excellent shape and body is in good shape (the rear spoiler was rotting off). The interior was not bad either. Just needs a good bottle or two of protectant and carpet cleaner. The only thing that I really had to work was a busted ball joint, busted CV boot, and bearing. Shoot, it even already had a FSTB installed.
Good luck. Even though they are out there for sale, you may have to do some traveling to get one.

Just keep checking autotrader. I didn't even want a new car, but when I found a black 92 5 speed on autotrader for $3300, I had to go look at it. Turns out I bought it for $2900, then turned around and sold my 92 SE auto w/ double the mileage for $2800. I'm a happy camper.

www.autotrader.com search and ye shall find. took me 6 months to find one near here. I even drove 400 miles to St Louis to look at one, and the guy turned out to be a crook. just look and you'll find one when the time is right.

good luck on the sale.
In Seattle, they're rather hard to find. I had to wait a couple of months for just 1 to show up, and bought it 2 days after I saw the ad. $4026 for the car with 141k. Not a bad purchase (a tad spendy), but I have put 15k miles on the car in the 6 months that I have owned it, and every mile has been a dream. Plus, in Seattle, everything seems more expensive.
My first Max was an accidental purchase. I went to a dealership looking for an Altima but the Max was sooooooo much nicer and the car sold itself to me.
My current Max I was going to buy as a second/work car, but the dealership wouldn't go lower on the price. I think they wanted $6000, but that was in (I think) 1998 and the car was only six years old with 60k. I only had about $4500. I ended up buying an 88 celica convertible for $2500. I told my brother about the Max and a few weeks later, he bought it (mainly because he loved my first one). I told him if he ever wanted to sell it, I was interested, so now it's MINE!
The 5-speeds are kind of hard to find. Just be patient, they are out there.
Besides, going on a road trip to find a car is fun. I drove all over the Northwest looking for a muscle car a few years ago. I ended up buying a 70 Nova SS, but I sold it back to the guy, because he lied about some stuff. Then I got an 86 Mustang GT convertible that was pretty sweet. My wife hated it, though and I went back to my Nissan roots and bought the current Max from my brother.

I'm about to go with a '96 240sx 5-spd.. there seems to be alot of em F/S around in this area. I test drove one today but I'm hoping this particular car was a dud because there were a dozen things that rattled when I revved up.
Is the s14 a good choice? Any longevity problems? I plan on test driving several more in the area to see what's out there. Surprisingly it didn't handle *that* much better than a 3d gen.

I'm in northern VA, I see that we are kinda far to do business.
PS- What if I do buy an auto? Is the 5-spd swap something that can be done relatively cheap?
