tranny self-diagnostics ??

I have been looking around the web for tranny info, and several places have mentioned doing "self diagnostics" first, before taking it in. I wasn't aware of anything like that on my car- Are tranny problems something that shows up on ECU codes, or are they referring to something else? (90 GXE).

There is a tranny diagnostics test on the computer for the tranny. Check out the Faqs sticky at the top of this forum. Craig has posted the directions.

Thanks- checked that out, and basically looks like it consists of turning on the key and watching the "P" light on the trans switch. If it blinks like 10 times without a long pause, then everything is OK with the electricals... mine doesn't blink at all, just lights up once, and then goes off. Not sure whether or not that test is applicable to the 90 GXE or not, but it sure diddn't work on mine. Didn't get to look at the ECU codes yet...
