Problem!!!! Need help A SAP Please!!!!

Aight, I have a 90 GXE and a while ago it had started to act up on me. I have an aftermarket muffler on it and i use the noise from it to tell what the engine is doing sometimes, and what it does is when im driving(mostly only after about 20-30 minutes of driving), the engine will like glitch almost. The noise from my muffler that ill hear is(in the best way to describe over the computer) like this: MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM..........MMMMMMMMMMMM.... .MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. in any gear. And when it does this the revs drop and jump back up to where they were before it happened. My mechanic said that its the feul pump and that its getting starved. I can understand that cause he hooked a gauge up to it but why would it only happen intermitently like that. Before i replaced my feul pump relay it would do that and then stall out on me. All the time, when i was accelerating, sitting at a light, parked, whenever. Now after the new relay it just glitches on me like i described above. And now yesterday when i was drivin my speedo needle went all crazy on me and was hoppin around and started to sit all the way to the right side and kinda read my speed backwards from 125. Now i did have a power steering fluid leak in the hose right under the hood on the passenger side against the fire wall that was leakin pretty bad, but i fixed that. could that have anything to do wit it?? now my mechanic is itchin to put a new feul pump in, but im not cause he gave me a price 490 for everything, and im broke right now as always and cant afford that. has anyone ever had this problem or anything like it. i mean what could it be, relay, shorted wire, are the speedo needle and glitching even related to eachother?? if anyone knows what im trying to say and may know what is wrong or anything, any feedback is great. SO thanks everyone for at least reading if you did and especially for any feedback, i really appreciate it. Sorry it was so long.

maybe too obvious, but have you replaced your fuel filter lately?

also, your speedo problem should be totally unrelated to any fuel problems you might be having. I would, however, go over all of your electronics and check for loose connections.

I would probably wait on the fuel pump. Usually, those just go out and totally stop working. Not always, but most of the time.

good luck
