Buying used car 92-96 Toyota Camry vs 3rd Gen Max

I'm currently in the market for a used car. I have 4000-5000 to spend. I currently have a 97 Maxima SE, and I love the car. My number one concern for my second car is reliabilty, then performance. How long could I expect a 3rd gen. Maxima to last with regular maintance? I'm planning to keep the car until it dies, so it will have to be reliable. Are there any known problems, other then the VVT on the SE models? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Well I have a 92 SE 5 Speed that is one of the fastest Maximas ever made. It currently has 270k miles.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion here, but if reliability is your main concern then got with the Toyota. They have a design and build quality that really speak to longevity. I've had several Toyotas and have never had a problem that brought it's reliabilty into question.

I like my 92SE, but I have many questions about how long it can be expected to go.

But I didn't buy my Max to goto 300K miles. I bought it to be a fun to drive four door. It slots in between my cargo van and my supercharged MR2 to provide comfortable, fun and spaceous travelling for upto 4 people. You'll get all of that from a Camry EXCEPT the fun. Camrys are VERY bland to drive. Not slow or cumbersome, just bland. They don't do anything wrong, but they also don't inspire. They WILL get you from point a to point b almost every time you want it to for the life of the vehicle.

If it's reliabilty that you want above all else it's a bland Camry for you. If you want good service life and fun, then consider the Max.

if you can get you hands on a camry se 5spd it wouldnt be that much differnt than a max se 5spd i test drove one when i was in the market and it was very pepy with 182hp but just didnt feel as sporty and the $8k price tag was out of my range for a 93 with 80k on the odo. with the max there are things like all ready covered VTCs, fuel injectors, coil packs, knock sensor, mass air flow meter, and if you want an auto the tranny all these things are prone to falier and all except for the auto part has failed on mine and although didnt cost much for me to fix if done at a shop would be very expensive.
