Tranny slipping, please help!!!

PLEASE HELP!!
I have an 89 maxima 162K miles. original tranny & engine.
One day (about a year ago) I decided to give it a little gas to catch up to my friend. When after a while of pushing it, the car felt like it was in nuetral, then keepin the accelerator in the same position I notice rpm going down slowly on it own, finally catching the gear.

Lately it been freuqently slipping. I've notice at about 3K RPM the tranny starts to slipping, (HIGHWAY)when im at 65 - 80 MPH at 2500K - 3K RPM the car doesn't want to go faster, and when the gear decides to catch, the car take forever to speed up. Tranny also likes to slip going up hill.

Any sugestions.
I hope it just a sensor and cheap.

SUMMARY:
- tranny freuqently slip, noticably at above 3K RPM
- 65 - 80 MPH at 2500K - 3K RPM the car doesn't want to go faster
- tranny slips going up hill

Your damage probably started a year ago with that first slip. Has the fluid been changed since then? You can try doing that, but I would guess it won't help at this point. Don't bother with any of the so-called tranny additives either. They won't help. 167K is a long time to go on the first tranny, and although there are people on here that have more than that without a rebuild, I'll bet it isn't too many, and it's the ones who have had good maintenance (=frequent fluid changes) from the beginning.

Reason I say this?? I have a 90 GXE with 176K on it, and I just got mine out of the tranny shop $1800 later... same symptoms as yours, only not quite so bad. So, I would say have it checked out, and hopefully you know somebody who can give you a deal....

Rebuild and install a oil-cooler that will make it last longer.

A friends 90 max would take long to go into gear after sitting over night. He put in a bottle of Lucaus Trans Fix and after a few days it fixed itself.
Might not work for you, but if it does you can save some bucks.
It sounds like the trans is on it's last leg to me.
