odometer/speedometer question

Just had my tranny rebuilt, and seems fine, but now my odometer is not working. Speedometer works fine. Are they both run off the same cable, or is it electronic, or what? Seems like it must be the odometer itself rather than the shop not re-hooking the cable or something. Just want to get some more info before I take it back and complain to the shop.

i have an 89 max and my speedo went jumpy for about 2 months, then it went to the max, then it died until what i hope will be half an hour. i just took off my speed sensor (right below the oil filter and towards the back of the car) and going through the other posts, i did indeed notice that the black rubber plug thing at the very top wasn't flush but rather like 1.5 inches out. so i jammed that back in there and this picture is the after shot, im not going to pull it back out and take a pic (but i drew a pic of it)
