I had a custom Y-pipe done 2" DIA up to the resonator. still have the stock pipe resonator and muffler.
But to save some money I had no CAT put in and just put in an other resonator where the CAT was to give a little more back pressure so I wouldn't loose to much power in the low end.
Still have lost some power though, it won't churp switching into 2nd any more but it sure likes 50mph to 120mph.
I was driving from the interior of BC to the coast Vancouver on the freeway during the day loaded with passengers it took 6 1/2 hrs. At night with no trafic empty through the mountains set the cruise at 90mph played around at the 110mph to 120mph for awhile, and did the trip in 4hrs 25min.
I was totaly impressed with the extra power and response at those speeds.
Can't wait till I have the money for the cat back and the CAI.

The back pressure issue was mentioned by another guy user IDshock211 who recommended that I go with the 2" DIA tubing insted of the 2 1/4" that he had tried. Because it was cutting the low end power. The Mechanic whom I have known for 12 years or so also said that "some" back pressure was required to maximise the low end. I am not a mechanic, so I am listening to experience here.
I was going to go with a straight pipe through to the resonator but thats when the mechanic suggested the 2nd resonator.
Anyway the sound this set up creates is unique to say the least, and the overall power has definetly increased.
So I'm happy
Here was the thread I refer to:
i have a 92 gxe and i've got a custom y-pipe made for my car.
here's my advice to you.
the stock y-pipe is 1.75" in diameter at the front and rear manifold down pipes. the diameter becomes 2.0" at the collector before the cat.
i strongly suggest that you have it made 2.0" for the front and rear downpipes and 2.25" for the collector. my current y-pipe is 2.25" for the downpipes and 2.5" at the collector and i've definately lost low end power. although the car is a freakin' monster on the highway
but i'm having mine re-designed so that i can have an even increase across all rpms and not just at high speeds.
Judge for yourself
