Automatic Transmission

I had heard that if i get an automatic SE or GXE and its got around 100K miles on it, i should get a rebuilt transmission or something. If i do get this car, do I need a rebuilt transmission and how much would that set me back?

Check to see if the previous owner has records of transmission service. If properly maintained, these units are pretty trouble-free. I get mine flushed every 15K miles. Expensive, yes, but at 156k miles, it still shifts nice and firm like when I got the car at 65K miles.

I learned my lesson the hard way on a previous car.

I can testify to the price. My rebuild was $1800 for my 90 GXE, but at 176K. Sucks, but I got the car for free from my sister, and I have all the maintenance records from day 1...so, I guess in the end I paid $1800 for my "free" GXE. Realistically, I can't complain much- the rest of the car is pretty cherry.

Basically, everything mechanical eventually wears out. But like these folks have said, preventive maintenance can make it last alot longer. Look into a cooler as well. Supposed to help alot.
