Ignition cylinder
Ignition cylinder
I have a 1992 Maxima Brougham and have run into a problem. Recently my ignition cylinder will not turn when the key is inserted. I have jiggled it a little and then it turns. I know I should have done something about it but just got busy. Now it's sitting the parking lot at work because the cylinder won't turn when the key is inserted.
My presumption is that I need a new cylinder. How tough is it to change these? Is it a job for a locksmith? Is it a job for the Nissan dealership?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
John.

It could just be the steering column locked the key cylinder. Try rotating the steering wheel when turing the key. If that doesnt work then spray some lubricant in the key hole (WD-40 or something).
Thanks - I tried a graphite based lubricant - but no use. I called every locksmith in the area and none were interested in trying. I could get a new cylinder through the dealership for $350.00 CDN without installation. I talked to some people who suggested that it would be easier to just replace the steering column as the lock set has breakaway bolts (anti-theft) that have to be drilled out.
I found a whole steering column (including airbag) at a wrecker's for $70 CDN and will get that installed.

Hey, If you take the trim off around the cylander, It just prys off, there is a red little lever you push down I think and that will unclick your little lock button you have to push to take your keys out. In my car I take my keys out of the ignition and go to the store and when I go back and put my keys in the ignition it will go in but wont turn, ikes its blocked sometimes I jiggle it and it will finally turn, but if not I have to take the plastic piece off and hit the lever to unlock it. I think its in the owners manual, I dont know where I learned it. Hope it works.
