Downshifting in An Auto

Hey i desperatly need new brake pads and i cant get them for a couple of days and i was in my friends 88' legend Manual and he was downshifting when coming to a stop and it slowed him down and i was wondering could i do this in my max even tho its auto because the less i have to step on my brakes the less it makes that really annoying and embarrising noise......soo what i am asking is it bad for my tranny to do this.....??
thanks....

would you rather have embarassing noise or fork out lots of $$$ to rebuild/buy another tranny?

bottom line, it's not good for the tranny if you repeatedly do that.

I like to take care of my tranny. It's one of the most weakest parts of the Maxima. You can replace your brakes for $35. You can replace your tranny for over $2000. I would just use your brakes rather than stressing out the tranny.

It sounds like you don't know too much about maintenance. No offense... not many people do. But go get a tranny flush or atleast get a mechanic to check the condition of your tranny fluid. It's the #1 reason why your tranny fails. Overheating and bad fluid.

Aye Ca-freakin'-rumba... Of course you can use your auto like a manual tranny. But then it wouldn't be called an auto, would it.

Yes you can downshift tranny for extra braking effort - but only in an emergency. Like the others said, brake pads are cheaper than tranny rebuild. If you brakes aren't working right, catch the bus or hitch a ride with your buddy.

it depends on how bad you wind it out too. a few times wont hurt it, its just not a regular habit to get into.

Simple as this, if your brakes are that bad, THEN YOU SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING! If you are that broke, how are you getting gas? There is NO--and I repeat--NO reason that breaks should be that worn. Heck, if your brakes are that bad, then you may need rotors also.

Like Aaron92SE said, it is terribly obvious that you are not too up-to-speed on maintenance issues with your Maxima.

You are asking how bad is it on your tranny to manually downshift. The real question should be more like how bad is your a$$ going to get reamed if you hit someone with a$$-out brakes?

DON'T DRIVE YOUR CAR UNTIL YOUR BRAKES ARE FIXED! Stopping is way more important that starting when it comes to cars.

I happen to be at a mechanic shop a little while back and saw an old 300zx chillin in the corner. When I asked my buddy why it had been sitting there so long he proceeded to tell me that the retard that had it towed in was being cheap and wouldn't shell out the money for new pads ( he qouted around $150) and now has to have the complete brake system rebuilt after braking hard on metal to metal. Guess how much he has to pay now!! Pads, rotors, calipers and labor. You add it up, ITS NOT WORHT IT. DONT DRIVE!
