Engine and Tranny advise
I have been wanting to do something to my engine. I wanted to rebuild it. I found out that I can put a turbo or a VG33 in it. My transmission is going bad. I have a five speed tranny. My questions are: 1. If I go turbo what do I need ? ( Do I need to buy the 84-89 single overhead cam 300 ZX turbo engine. what do I need to modify it? )
2. Can i put a VG33 in it? ( What do i need to modify it? )
3. If I rebuild my transmission where should i go for performance, because I have a stage 1 Clutchmaster clutch and want to put a stage 2 or 3 in. Will my tranny be able to withstand those clutches if I go to a regular shop for a rebuild?
Thank You

i think the only Z engines you can use is the 87-89. I was thinking that those are the ones with the longer crank snout. The Z engine i have has the longer crank snout (i'm pretty sure) and the maxima crank pulley fits on it fine. If the 84-86 is a shorter crank you probably won't be able to use it in the maxima without a custom crank pulley of some sort. I'll try measuring the crank tomorrow to make sure i'm right. If so, what you'll need to do is get the 87-89 300zx engine. The only downside with these engines is they have T25 turbo manifolds. You have two options from here, however. You can do what I did and free up more room for the turbo (and upgrades later) and have a custom crossover pipe made for the turbo to bolt onto. This will require you to move the battery to the trunk but this will make life a lot easier when you want to uprage turbos. This also moves the turbo further away from the radiator which made me feel much better. Your other option is to get the turbo manifolds from the 84-86 300zx turbo and have custom motor mounts made. You will also need to get a thinner fan shroud so there is enough room for the turbo. You will need to switch the intake manifold on those engines for the maxima intake manifold. Then you will need to run the piping for the intake and choose whether you want an aftercooler or not. If you use the stock T3 turbo (84-86) your limit non-aftercooled is about 10 psi. If you do use an aftercooler with the 84-86 turbo the max is about 14-16 psi. You'll need to get your ecu retuned or run a stand alone fuel system to control the injectors properly.
For the tranny, your best bet it to find some sort of performance tranny shop to make sure they get it built to handle the power. But... you'll be looking at a 2000-3000 dollar bill for this kind of work. A standard rebuild might be able to handle the power for a while if you don't drop the clutch a lot. I'll be finding out how well the trannies hold up to these engines soon... hopefully it will last me long enough to get it built for power.
I don't really think you will need a VG33... unless you want to pull more than 400-500 wheel horsepower. The VG30ET engines are capable of pushing that kind of power. You do need to build it up to handle that power, of course, but the engines can do it. Someone is pushing that much on www.z31.com right now. Also, with the VG30 you can order VG30DETT internals and they will go right in and that would be much cheaper than having custom stuff made for the VG33. Even the crank will go in after it is machined a little bit. Those cranks will handle 600 hp.
I have some basic stuff that i did on my cardomain site if you want to check that out. the link is in my sig. I hope some of this info helps you out. If you have any questions I'll be glad to try answering.
