Timing adjustment

My car is pinging under load. Is there a way to back off on the timing (timing adj) I checked the marks at idle and not really sure how to read. I think there was 7 lines and mine was between 3 & 4 starting from the left.

There is a sticker under the hood on mine that shows where it should be, try that. If not its in the haynes manual also.

Yep, you need a timing light/gun, hooked to the battery and the pickup on plug wire number 1.

Sticker says 15 degrees before TDC, how do you read the marks on the pulley, what does each notch represent, which one is TDC? Do you disconect anythibg when timing?

TDC is the first mark on the pulley I believe its orange, each mark after that represents 5*. So after the first mark three marks after that (4 total) would be 15*BTDC. You won't have to unplug anything but the ECU does have to be put in diagnostic mode III however. What you do is have the engine running at normal operating temp, turn the diagnostic selector screw fully clockwise and wait for both red/green LED's to flash 3 times, after that turn the screw fully counter-clockwise. Next race the engine 2-3 times under no load (rev it over 3k rpm 3 times) and this will lock in base ignition timing so you can adjust it.

Well, all I did was time it to the 4th mark ( 15*) didn't turn anything off and she seems to run sweet. Not sure about diagnostic mode III and what you mean. Haven't messed with this yet, just got car.
